Microneedling
Microneedling is a treatment that can improve the way the skin looks and feels. It stimulates collagen and elastin production to help with fine lines and skin texture and is one of the best treatments for acne scarring. It can be done with or without the boost of PRP (your body’s own growth factors). Be aware that not all microneedling is the same – at Evolution Dermatology we are able to treat down into the deeper layers of your skin to maximize great results!
Microneedling can be done on your face and neck to It involves pricking the skin with tiny sterilized needles. The small wounds cause your body to make more collagen and elastin, which heal your skin and help you look younger. You might also hear it called collagen induction therapy
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a procedure where an electric-powered pin device with fine needles is moved across your skin. The needles puncture the top layer of the skin and create a controlled skin injury (micro wounds) with the goal of improving skin texture and promoting collagen growth. Once a micro-injury is created with the needles, your body is stimulated to produce new collagen to fill them in as part of the healing process. Generating new collagen allows your skin to look firmer, smoother and more toned.
Microneedling can be done on the face and neck and can improve acne scars, wrinkles, and large pores. The goal of the procedure is to start your body’s healing process by sending collagen and elastin to patch up the tiny injuries. Collagen helps fill in and smooth out wrinkles.
It’s important to know that not all microneedling is created equal! Our microneedling is medical grade and performed by our experienced licensed providers so that you can get maximum results.
What to expect with Microneedling:
The procedure usually takes about 45 minutes, depending on how big the area is. Most people need anywhere from 3-6 treatments (done about a month apart) for the best results. In the office, a topical numbing cream will be applied to the area to be treated and left on for about 30 minutes.
Once the numbing cream is removed the area will be cleaned with alcohol. A vibrating pen with tiny needles will be applied to your skin. As the treatment is done, a hyaluronic acid gel will be applied (along with PRP if you add this to the procedure) to both moisturize and enhance the results.
After your treatment, the area will be red and there will be areas of pinpoint bleeding and possibly bruising. It is important for the next 24 hours that you only apply hyaluronic acid gel to soothe and moisturize the area without causing a reaction. No makeup or sunscreen for these first 24 hours.
After 24 hours, you can apply non-irritating products (fragrance free, etc) and a zinc based SPF. The area will remain red for 2-3 days and you may experience some flaking or peeling for up to 5-7 days depending on the depth and intensity of your treatment.
Adding Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) to your treatment:
When PRP is added to microneedling, your own growth factors from the PRP are able to soak down into the channels created with the microneedles and enhance the stimulation of collagen and elastin production. It is a powerful way to get the most out of your procedure. The PRP comes from your own blood, so involves a blood draw in the office. Then we spin it down in a centrifuge to harvest the platelet rich plasma that contains your growth factors. This only takes about 10 minutes and can be done while you are waiting for the topical numbing cream to take action.
