Is it possible to get rid of sun damage, red vessels, and brown spots?

IPL is one of the best treatments to do just that!

But What is IPL? And Can it work for you?

Colorado sunshine is beautiful, but years of sun exposure can leave behind unwanted reminders—brown spots, freckles, redness, visible blood vessels, and uneven skin tone.

If you're noticing these changes in your skin, IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), also known as a photofacial, may be just what you need.

At Evolution Dermatology + Wellness in Boulder, we use IPL technology to target visible signs of sun damage and help restore a brighter, more even complexion—with relatively minimal downtime for many patients.

Let's take a closer look at how IPL works, what it treats, and what you can expect from your treatment.

WHAT IS IPL AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

The primary goal of IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is to create a more even skin tone by reducing brown spots, sun damage, and redness. Unlike lasers, which use a single wavelength of light, IPL uses multiple wavelengths to target unwanted pigment and small blood vessels while minimizing damage to surrounding skin. At Evolution Dermatology, we use the advanced Lumenis M22 IPL system to deliver effective, customized treatments.

WHAT SKIN CONCERNS CAN IPL IMPROVE?

Anyone with photodamage that appears as blotchiness, discoloration, brown spots, or small blood vessels (telangiectasia) could benefit from IPL procedures. Additionally, one of the most gratified groups of patients that see results are those with rosacea, a type of adult acne and skin inflammation. The IPL can reduce the acne component of rosacea, telangiectasia, generalized redness, and even flushing.

BOTTOM LINE … FLUSHING, SMALL VESSELS, BROWN SPOTS, DISCOLORATION AND ACNE CAN BE IMPROVED WITH IPL!

A side benefit from multiple treatments (approx. 3-5) with IPL is that it also can help reduce pore size and improve skin texture and laxity by promoting collagen production. The light not only has an impact on the surface of the skin but also heats the cells in the deeper layer of skin. These cells, called fibroblasts, are stimulated to produce more collagen, which improves texture and skin laxity.  Nice side benefit!

WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED?

Your face, neck, chest, backs of hands, and sometimes arms (depending on your skin type - you must have fair skin for the arms).

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO BEFORE I BOOK AN IPL?

Make sure you don't have tanned skin (even a fake one). And it helps NOT to wear makeup when you arrive for your appointment.

WHAT DOES AN IPL TREATMENT FEEL LIKE?

We'll ask you to arrive about 15 minutes early so we can apply a topical numbing cream for your comfort. Once your skin is numb, we'll remove the cream, place protective eye shields over your eyes, and apply a cooling gel.

During treatment, you'll feel a quick, warm snap with each pulse of light—similar to a rubber band against your skin. It's not entirely painless, but most patients tolerate it well! We'll talk you through the process so you know exactly what's happening.

A full-face IPL treatment typically takes just 15–20 minutes. Afterward, we'll gently cleanse your skin, apply a soothing mask, and finish with mineral sunscreen before you head out the door.

WHAT IS THE DOWNTIME AFTER IPL?

One of the biggest advantages of IPL is that there is minimal downtime for most patients!

Immediately after treatment, your skin may look and feel slightly sunburned, with mild redness or warmth that typically improves within a few hours to a day. Brown spots often become darker before developing a "coffee ground" appearance as the treated pigment gradually comes to the surface.

These darkened spots typically flake off or fade naturally within 7–10 days, revealing a clearer, more even complexion. Avoid picking or exfoliating the treated areas—let your skin do the work!

Some patients may experience temporary swelling, particularly around the eyes or cheeks, and occasionally mild bruising. Blistering or crusting beyond the expected pigment darkening is uncommon but can occur.

Most patients can return to their normal daily activities right away, although gentle skincare and diligent sun protection are essential while the skin heals.

IS IPL SAFE? ARE THERE ANY RISKS?

IPL is generally safe and effective when performed by a trained, experienced provider. However, because IPL uses light energy to heat targeted areas of the skin, proper settings and technique are essential.

Although uncommon, potential complications include burns, blistering, changes in skin pigmentation, and, rarely, scarring. Certain skin types and recently tanned skin may be at greater risk.

Experience matters! Choosing a knowledgeable provider who understands your skin type, the technology, and appropriate treatment settings is key to achieving beautiful results while minimizing risks.

At Evolution Dermatology, we carefully evaluate your skin and customize each treatment with safety and natural-looking results in mind.

HOW MANY IPL TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

Some people see great results after the first session, but usually 3 to 5 sessions are recommended, one month apart.

HOW DO I MAINTAIN MY RESULTS?

To keep your skin looking bright and even, we typically recommend maintenance IPL treatments once or twice a year, depending on your skin and sun exposure.

Just as important? Daily sun protection! Wearing a broad-spectrum SPF 30–50 sunscreen, even on cloudy Colorado days, helps prevent new sun damage and maintain your results.

We love mineral-based sunscreens, especially after IPL, when your skin may be more sensitive. Our team can help you choose the right sunscreen to keep your skin protected and looking its best!
